The WNBA is having more than a moment, and we’re here for it.
Today, the WNBA released information pointing out the surge in fan interest to start the league’s 28th year. The season has started with a bang, breaking attendance, viewership, and merchandise sales records across the board.
“What’s happening now in women’s basketball is confirmation of what we’ve always known: The demand is there, and women’s sports is a valuable investment,” said Chief Growth Officer Colie Edison.
Here’s a quick rundown of the league’s major achievements so far:
Record Attendance
- Highest in 26 Years: Over 400,000 fans attended games in May, with more than half of the matches selling out.
- 94% Arena Capacity: A significant 17% increase from last year. Fans are coming out!
Skyrocketing Viewership
- 1.32 Million Average Viewers: Nearly triple last season’s figures.
- Network Highlights: ESPN2’s Opening Night saw 2.12 million viewers, the highest ever on Disney platforms. ABC’s game on May 18 became the most-viewed WNBA game on the network.
- Diverse Audiences: Viewership among people of color rose by 60%, with notable increases among Hispanic (96%) and Black (67%) fans. Viewership among under-35s and young girls jumped by 124% and 139%, respectively.
Digital Engagement
- App and League Pass: Monthly active users on the WNBA App surged by 613%, and League Pass subscriptions tripled, reaching new records. (Check out our list of 7 things to know before signing up for WNBA League Pass).
- Social Media: The WNBA’s social channels saw 157 million video views in the first week, a 380% increase from last year.
- Strong Rookie Class: Highlights of Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark, Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, Los Angeles Sparks’s Cameron Brink and Las Vegas Aces’ Kate Martin have driven most digital engagement.
Merchandise Sales
